Curious about the program for the Storytelling in Words and Images retreat with Marloes de Vries? See what we’re up to here!
17:00 – 19:00 – Welcome
The doors are opened, the beds made, soup is ready.
20:00 – Introduction
When the weather is nice, there is a campfire outside, where we sit around to get to know each other better.
08:00 / Breakfast
Enjoy a delicious breakfast with crusty German bread, yogurt, fruit and freshly made granola.
09:30 / Workshop 1
In the first workshop, you’ll gain inspiration and explore images and text. We’ll look at visual stories and graphic novels. How is a good story structured? What does a story need? What’s a suitable format for your story? You’ll brainstorm on your own story.
12:00 / Own time
Everyone goes their own way. We have set out beautiful walks, or you can relax in or around the house. A do-it-yourself lunch is ready in the kitchen.
14:30 / Workshop 2
Based on a memory or an idea, you’ll start writing your story. You’ll examine the elements of your story: main character, supporting characters, setting, environment, emotion, and message. You’ll learn about pacing (speeding up and slowing down) in images and how to create a coherent narrative.
17:30 / Drinks
Let’s chat about today with a drink in the Rose Garden.
18:30 / Dinner
The table is set. When the weather is nice we eat outside, by the fire bowl and the setting sun.
20:00 / Relax!
Spend the evening however you want. We’ll make a big campfire in the garden: marshmallows and sticks are ready, and bring your sketchbook if you feel like it. Or dive into the Finnish sauna, relax in the hot tub or read a book.
08:30 / Breakfast
Enjoy a delicious breakfast with crusty German bread, yogurt, fruit and freshly made granola.
09:30 / Workshop 3
Marloes shows you how she creates her travel journals: not just with drawings, but also how to write a story that’s enjoyable and engaging for readers. You’ll learn what to tell with words and what to tell with images, how to combine words with drawings, and how to create a composition. Then you’ll get to work on your own story and drawings.

14:30 / Workshop 4
In the afternoon, you’ll learn what to tell in text and what to show in images, with the two reinforcing each other. You’ll also learn the benefits of color for your story. You’ll continue working on your own story and drawings, and Marloes will be there to help.
